Abstract

Citation resources like Web of Science (WOS), Scopus and Google Scholar (GS) are tools which facilitate citation analysis in an academic environment. The introduction of Scopus and GS introduces competition to the monopoly held by WOS for more than 40 years. This study aimed to establish to what extent GS compare with WOS and Scopus in terms of South African scholarly Environmental Science journals for the period 2004-2008. The sample population (9 journals / 3225 journal articles) was identified by determining a list of internationally accredited South African Environmental Sciences journals. The total citation counts were calculated from the journal articles and retrieved via WOS, Scopus and GS. The normalised citation count was calculated by taking multiples and unique items into consideration. The focus of this poster is on the Web-based content verification process which involved 5 areas of performance: citation counts, multiple records, unique records, document types and inconsistencies encountered. It became evident during the verification process that the citation resources received varied results.
