Abstract

Electronic portfolios improve the quality of work by a learner during work-integrated learning. Traditional (paper-based) portfolios have been successfully utilised by lecturers and learners in the form of files, boxes and/or binders holding paper, cassettes, pictures, drawings. The learner’s practical experience is collected by means of such an portfolio.  Some research has been done to address the shortcomings of traditional work-integrated portfolios, for example how to store learning evidence electronically. An e-portfolio is therefore a collection of electronic evidence assembled and managed by a learner, usually via the Web.  Such electronic evidence may include electronic files for formats such as text, images, multimedia, blog entries and even hyperlinks to other web-based files.  e-Portfolios therefore demonstrates the user’s ability to utilise web platforms to manage personal learning outputs.  Furthermore, varying degrees of audience access is permitted: the same portfolio might be accessed by various users (e.g. academic staff, employees, learners). This paper established to what extent the e-portfolio can be utilised to effectively manage the learning record or evidence of learners during work-integrated learning at a university of technology.
