Abstract

The purpose of this study is to determine how Facebook as a social networking site can be used, help and influence the education of tertiary level students that are doing project management.  This can be done using Facebook as a communication medium through posting ideas and taking part in group discussions. It will be run anonymously which will encourage group discussions and posting of different ideas to be viewed by students enrolled for this subject.  Students will have their own Facebook pages and actively seek to link with those of their fellow students doing the same subject.

Boyd, 2008 emphasized that students enjoy sharing information they have in common.  My question is will students at a tertiary level have the same interest in joining an educational group, to share academic related matters, concerns, questions and interest?  Will they be open to experience the freedom of expressing their own ideas? I will make use of qualitative research in diarise any progress on a daily bases to see how many of the students participated and how often

The diaries measure will also include weekly survey’s in open-ended questions like:

·         Why did you decide to use Facebook as an educational tool?

·         What was the most useful comment that you found on the project management group page?

·         Did you feel part of the project management study community?

At the end of the semester they will also conduct a paper-and–pencil questionnaire on their participation before joining this group discussions and whether or not they were active as a Facebook user before this semester.
