Abstract

Technology has changed the way in which work is done , and what work is done.  More and more organisations are moving towards flexible work hours and now even flexible workplaces.  Telework is the term that describes a variant of the traditional office based work model where an employee is working away from their normal location and has remote access to the office. Whilst the term telework was coined by Nilles in 1998, very little is known of its implementation in South Africa.  The aim of this study is to determine whether organisations have implemented telework and if not the reasons for not having done so.  This study revealed that whilst some organisations implemented telework there were many barriers facing those companies that didn’t which included:  legal issues, privacy and security of data, diminished work performance and standards, friction between employees and household conflict.   It is recommended that organisations considering implementing telework  should include it in their strategy in terms of sustainability and becoming lowest cost producers.
