Abstract
The inception of Information and Communication Technology (ICT) has created an interconnection between people and technology throughout the world. This has resulted in a large usage of handheld technological equipment such as mobile cellular phones. The developments in ICT have made it possible for technological services that exist in desktop computers to be transmitted and made available on mobile cell phones. This advancement has been made possible by the increasing power of mobile device processors, memory, and the increase in popularity of Virtual Learning Environments (VLEs). The application that has been developed is a middleware that will sit between Moodle and the java MIDlet. The middleware application is coded using PHP because Moodle is written in the same language. The main technologies that were used in the development process are PHP, JavaME, the HTTP protocol for communicating with the Apache HTTP server and a MySQL database for saving user data. This paper describes the development of mobile interface application for Moodle. This service will allow lecturers and students to access course materials via mobile phones using Moodle platform. Learning is no longer confined by the wall of the classroom; it is all around us, it is whatever we do, what we read, what we watch and what we listen to Mobile devices are at the center of this kind of learning and this application aims at bringing a more formal, classroom like environment for learning. This paper describes how eLearning and mLearning were combined into an application that provides students and lecturers with a more flexible way of learning and interacting.
