Abstract

The introduction of Web Services as a platform upon which applications can communicate has contributed a great deal in the expansion of World Wide Web technologies. The internet and computing technologies have been some of the factors that have contributed to the socio-economical improvement in urban and industrial areas. This paper focuses on the concept of Service-Oriented Architecture (SOA) and Web Services technology. SOA is a style used to design distributed system and Web Services are well suited as the basis of SOA environment. Web Services allow exchange of data between two or more machine in a simple and standardized manner over the network which has resulted in the augmentation of ways in which individuals in a society and in the world communicate at various levels. This paper discusses how the concept of SOA will be used to develop a system that will improve the mode of communication in rural areas. It discusses the existing ICT infrastructure in the research area and how the system will make use of them. It also discusses the development of Web Services, such as SMSs, MMSs, Email and IM, that will be consumed either from a web interface or as backend processes. It discusses their implementation in one of the South Africa’s rural areas, Dwesa, and how the community will benefit from them.
