Abstract

Advances in Internet technologies are spawning an information society. Information is easily available to the naive researcher, a simple Google search and you have the information that you require. Universities, governmental organisations, non-profit organisations and cooperates are designing and developing data repositories, information portals and data warehouses. An inappropriate Google search may lead the naive researcher down the wrong path. In a survey of recently completed PhD thesis, some PhD students used a ‘desktop’ research approached. In short, the candidates sat at their computers and mined the Internet for all their data requirements. The purpose of this paper is to provide naive researchers with a framework in which to navigate the data on the internet, the ideas in this paper particularly look at the concept of focused problem-based research
