Abstract

Information and Communication Technologies (ICTs) play a major role in enterprise development, education, health, agriculture and commerce. Thus, its potential to transform development is now receiving greater attention worldwide. The World Wide Web (WWW) has become the prime driver of modern e-commerce. The web together with other ICT enabling technologies offer a platform in the way organisations arrange their business processes, address their marketplaces, and partner with other enterprises. The aim of this paper is to identify specific barriers to the exploitation of ICTs by tourism SME service providers in the City of Tshwane in Gauteng. Roger’s framework was found useful as the study sought to understand the hindrances to the use of modern ICTs by tourism SME service providers. This theory has been widely applied to investigate diffusion of organisational and societal innovations, such as ICTs. Thus, the theory’s application to ICTs and organisational and societal relations made it the most appropriate theoretical framework for this study. The investigation adopts a descriptive survey research design in which random sampling technique is used. The data analysis was executed by using descriptive statistics. Results reveal that high cost, limited funds and lack of technical know-how are barriers in the diffusion of ICTs among the tourism SME service providers. The internet era is unfolding and anybody can now log on to their computers and take care of their financial business online in the comfort of their own homes. It is also worth pointing out that one of the fastest-growing areas of business during the past decade is e-commerce. New companies have been formed to market and sell goods and services exclusively using the internet. Many long-established companies then introduced the online purchasing (insurance and banking companies quickly identified the advantages of doing business via the Internet).
