A model for a socially-aware mobile tourist recommendation system

Abstract
People, whether for business or pleasure, often travel or visit locations they are unfamiliar with. This limits touring to those locations they’re already familiar with, while missing out on those they are not. A common solution to this problem is the use of a mobile tourist recommendation system. Such a system typically recommends tourist locations based on a number of criteria. Typical examples are time, location, and a user’s personal preferences. One criterion systems often don’t take into account is a person’s social environment. This is an important consideration as touring is often done with more than one person. By not considering other people, recommendations are only limited by the preferences of a single person. The purpose of this paper is to discuss the consideration of a person’s social environment within a mobile tourist recommendation system and propose a model which can support this. This is done by studying other systems that do take a person’s social environment into account, identifying aspects not considered within them, and proposing a possible solution. These findings are then used to form a model able to harness a person’s social environment when recommending tourist locations.
